2007-03-11 [BarleySinger]: It really does bother me that there is so much revisionist history and out and out mytholgy regarding the beginnings of wicca. The origin of words like "coven", "sabbat", and people embracing ideas like "the witches familiar" come straight out of the odd imagining of the loonies who ran their inquisition (which had nothing to do with real witchcraft). Even the word "Wicca" itself has even been given a new meaning by people. From what I understand from older brittish dictionaries that the word Wicca is a mispelling of the word for "a male witch", and has nothing to do with shaping or bending anything. Mind you, I see nothing wrong with Wicca for those who want it; however the truth is that it is a new pagan religion, not an old one. It need not be new to be valid or useful.

But due to gardners hermetic influences, there are a lot of ritual elements in Wicca that came from groups like The Golden Dawn, Ordo Templi Orientis, The Masons, etc. The majority of what happens in wiccan gatherings (as a former wiccan who ran open public circles) were lifted directly from mermetic cerimonies fromthe groups he had been in. THe standard gathering consistes of a "group witchcraft ritual" (create and cleanse a circle, raise power and driect it, have cakes and wine, etc) and all that came as a cross between hermetic magic, James frasier, and Roman Catholicism.

Where else wouldit come from, given that Gardener was in those groups. So he just shuffled those rituals together from ideas out of James Frasier (of "The Golden Bough"). James Frasier (from those who have not read his stuff) wrote that at one time there had been a huge and ancient global goddess witchcraft religion. It was supposed to have spanned the globe in ancient times. Those ideas are no longer accepted historically but thery were once and they were a big part of his ideas.

Yes, Wicca can be mono-, duo-, or polytheistic. However, Ostara is a day in celebration of a specific Goddess: Eostre. She is considered one of the forms of the Goddess, particularly by those who focus on keeping Wicca a mono- or duotheistic religion. :) Put simply, Ostara is a day of celebration of the Goddess in her Maiden form.

As far as how many Gods and Goddesses there are...Well, put simply, there is an infinite amount. I have a list of many of history's known Gods and Goddesses (and some who are not quite Gods), but man has always created his own Gods...in a sense. I think that all Gods mentioned in history are part of a singular Divinity, split apart into many for the sake of human understanding. It's much easier for us to empathize with a God if He or She takes on a human shape--or at least a shape that humans can recognize. I think the Christian form of Deity is probably one that is slightly more accurate than most. However, most are convinced that Divinity is patriarchal and therefore God must be male, as well as an outright belief that all other Gods are "Satan". If they hadn't put Satan on a pedastle...-shakes head- People create their own Gods much of the time. Look at Gaia. She is considered a Neo-God basically. She is actually something from a fictional novel, if I remember correctly, however many took up this idea and used Her in their beliefs. It's complicated, I suppose...
